Activity Corner Link-Up -- Magnet Board Marble Track

I've got some energy back (thank you 2nd trimester), but I am so done with hot temperatures that I am determined to stay indoors as much as possible. Lame parenting? Maybe. And we are on a break from the parks for a bit anyway.  (Think back to that post about my active, doesn't necessarily think before he moves toddler.) I digress.

Back to the activity...back to the pin:

Source: teachpreschool.org via Gaby on Pinterest

And back to our go at this marble track (with lots of pictures):

I grabbed some magnets on my last Michaels trip, and let's not talk about my tp roll hoarding problem. Come on, you never know when you need something like this right?

I didn't look back at the post before attaching the magnets, which had stickers so I didn't have to hot glue anything, but I should have double checked. If you check the original link you can see how she placed the magnets on the sides instead of underneath. I also noticed that her magnets are thicker than the ones I bought.

Someone had a great time explaining just what happens when you drop the marbles in.

W did some track arranging himself but the facts that my magnets weren't so strong enough and that I placed them the wrong way made for some shifty tracks.

We figured it out though, and perhaps our track wasn't as fancy as intended, we had a great hour or so hanging out with our marbles, magnets, and tp rolls.

Do you want a turn?

We'll definitely do this again and change our approach a bit. Thanks again for a great link-up!

Semi-Wordless Wednesday (The Details)

 Cajun Shrimp #2 due March 8, 2013

So yep, we are due early March which might turn into the last week of February. This was a 15 week picture. I didn't take weekly pictures while pregnant or keep up a weekly bumpdate, and I don't know how I feel about attempting for this pregnancy. While I do wish that I had kept track of stats like weight, cravings, and such for comparison, I don't think the world needs to know that I gained .7 pounds this week or ate Cheddar JalapeƱo Cheetos like they were the last food on Earth. (Try those Cheetos if you haven't. You'll thank me.)

Maybe I'll keep taking pictures. Maybe I'll write letters to sweet baby. I'm not sure yet and suppose I should decide, but for today I'm simply grateful for the growing belly and prayerful for a healthy baby. We don't plan on finding out the gender (well, that's if J doesn't talk me into it), so our hearts are preparing for a sweet surprise early 2013!

Friday Night Cooking Fun

I don't mind the whole cooking gig, but we typically enjoy a kitchen break on the weekends and get food to go or play the game of chance taking W to a family friendly restaurant here and there. I did not mind cooking a bit this past Friday when I attended a class at Houston's own Well Done Cooking Classes, and it wasn't just any class but a chance to get together with the girls to celebrate our sweet friend's upcoming nuptials. (Now doesn't that just sound fancy--nuptials.)

There were matching aprons; 4, yes FOUR, new 30 minute recipes introduced; lots of laughter, adult humor, and wine, lots of wine. I, of course, treated myself to a bottle of water or two. Living it up.

 And yes, there were blow-torches!

One of our partners in crime helped to crystallize the skin of the salmon. Did you know you can eat that? And you should!

I only had my (old) iPhone with me, so my food porn pics aren't quite so much, but the dishes were pretty amazing.

I'll be trying them at home soon and sharing the recipes, all with proper credit to Well Done of course. I almost busted out my dork card when our chef was telling us about salting food and mentioned that if you are in doubt at all, add more. I so badly wanted to mention the name of this blog, and decided in my sobriety that no one was probably interested.

All cell phones came out though for our bride-to-be's intensity with the flame. Whether she adds it to her registry or not, she might just be receiving 10 of these from some of her favorite cooking girlfriends.

Project Pinterest -- Texans Football Mantel

When AP proposed the idea of a Pinterest link-up where you do more than pin (you DO), I found myself ready for the challenge. We are talking knocking out one of those great ideas that somehow ended up on a craft, foodie, or "for the home" board somehow. Gentle link-up blog pressure + a metric crap-ton of pins that need to be addressed = win!

And then there's the excitement of seeing what everyone else's projects/dishes. What, you don't want more pins?

This week I decided to share my version of a Houston Texans football wreath I'd had pinned since at least early summer and finally crafted the past three weeks. Yes, it's taken me three weeks for this one. I bought the wrong wreath, didn't have enough fabric, and have a toddler that isn't so fond of Momma's CWA (Crafting While Awake --toddler awake I mean).  I suppose I can't fulfill my "driving trains" role as well while wielding a hot glue gun.

Like I said, this was meant to happen three weeks ago. In my head my September mantel was to look like football season threw up all over it. That project took a back seat to life, and it's almost October, where pumpkins will soon make their debut. We'll have our football mantel if just for a week! It'll be a work in progress for sure with much to add through the years.

I used this tutorial (go there! You'll want to pin her adorable Halloween wreath!), but also ran across this burlap rag wreath tutorial, and I know how some of y'all love you some burlap!

I will leave you to journey on the tutorial on the link I shared as I don't need to recreate the wheel here. I will note that I only wrapped the 2 inner rings along the 4 ring wreath and used about a yard of each fabric. I think it's plenty "full" but can only imagine it would get cuter and cuter. I just have only so many trips to the fabric store in me.

I made my wreath more "rag" than the original pin, and I need to work on some added embellishments, but I love having something fun for football season. I didn't take pictures as I went along (come on, it was hard enough getting the damn thing done!), I've got the (mostly) finished product; it needs a bow or Texans cutout or something.

I added these other mantel details with craft supplies and whatnots around the house.

My football field banner didn't come out as awful as I thought it would. I don't think this will last very long, and I hope to make something more permanent...maybe once hubs hooks me up with some fancy cutting machine for Christmas.

Happy Fall! Happy Football! And Happy Crafting! Thanks AP again for hosting such a fun link-up!

Most Days I Love "Two"

This week needs this ending. I need these pictures, these thoughts, and the happy memories the sweet little boy shares with me.

Toddlers get such a bad rap, deservedly so no doubt. We've had our share of chaos the last couple of days. The days weren't "terrible" ones, and the fact that The Sheriff is two had little to do with the tough times we all endured. Mostly, he's a boy; he's active; he's rough; he moves without caution. Everyone is ok, but this momma knows for sure that W's guardian angel exists.

Just for today I want to clear the name of toddlers everywhere to remind me that yes, they might be two, but that also means that:

They are the world's cutest and most willing helpers with yard work

They know what it means to be held and allow themselves to be

They know who makes them smile

They sometimes look far too grown up and make us pinch ourselves and appreciate the now

They are happiness bottled in a tiny frame

They show beauty in simplicity

They are silly in ways that make us appreciate youth

They are passionate about their interests

Thanks J for allowing me to steal all of your Instagrams!

The Writer and the Reason Behind the Blog

This post has been floating around my head for months, especially during times like the one within which I currently find myself, a week where not a single post drafts itself in my mind, a week where even creating some sort of list calls for too much effort, a week where the wells of my expression are dry. Weeks like this one call to question why I find myself allotting so many minutes and hours of my life in front of this screen, in front of your words and mine.

Joan Didion's essay "Why I Write" sums up most accurately how I feel about the blogging world:
In many ways writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind.  It’s an aggressive, even a hostile act.  You can disguise its qualifiers and tentative subjunctives, with ellipses and evasions—with the whole manner of intimating rather than claiming, of alluding rather than stating—but there’s no getting around the fact that setting words on paper is the tactic of a secret bully, an invasion, an imposition of the writer’s sensibility on the reader’s most private space.
We call ourselves documenters, storytellers, photographers, crafters, community seekers, and writers. We capture moments for our families and connect with family and friends.  At the end of the day, we call ourselves bloggers.  Within its nature the term suggests sharing thoughts, photographs, oneself with the rest of the world, and perhaps as Didion suggests, "imposing."

I don't buy the "I write for me" argument. At least not completely. Didion expounds, "I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means.  What I want and what I fear."

Those very words could have been my mantra throughout my teens and twenties.

These are a just a handful of the journals I've filled in my time as a "writer." The Sheriff would be proud of the Pooh Bear notebook I suppose.  (And in a note to my husband and best friend as well, you are to burn these upon my passing. That is unless you suppose my fame might come Emily Dickinson style in which case feel free to publish the good stuff.)

Yes, many of us write for the very reasons of discovering ourselves and exploring the chapters in life's journey, but I believe once one chooses to create a space of one's own online, the intentions behind writing expand to sharing, connecting, "imposing."

My own blogging space has become a family scrapbook, a way of holding onto both the big moments and small ones alike. If I didn't want others to connect to my life in some way, I would have chosen a more classical approach. This connection may find itself more tangible for family members and close friends, and perhaps simply as fellow toddler moms, foodies, or crafters for blog friends.

I still journal, not as often as I used to or as often as I should, but there are certainly pieces of my life that need writing to pull them together or in some instances, pull them apart. There are pieces personal and mine, and others meant just for my family, and these I refrain from posting. While it would be nice to admit that this blog has morphed into a simple way to document our lives, my heart knows there's more. My heart wants long distance family members and friends to experience life right beside us. My heart wants to connect with others who experience the same moments and wants to learn from others who have experienced different.

There are days I want to create the next best thing, whether it be a craft, toddler activity, or recipe. There are days I want to be so captivatingly witty that readers can't wait to see what I post next. I sometimes search for the right post to "impose" upon readers, and I believe that the number of bloggers who write without readers in mind is quite small. Other days I question which blogs I allow to enter my own "personal space."

Those days of wishing and wanting carry unnecessary pressure, so I typically post what I've got, dismiss the thought of being the next Queen of Blogland, and shift back into reality where there are people that love me for me.

This is where I thank you for allowing my storytelling, my documenting, my moment-capturing to enter your hearts and minds and connect on some level or another because yes, I'm writing for me, for my family, but the very act of writing, and especially composing via blog posts, adds someone else to the picture as well.

We're Pregnant!!! Flashback...

We let Daddy in on the news:

I had some pregnancy tests, and although it was early, I took a test that morning (and then another) and when that double line appeared could not contain my excitement. But, to tell J on the phone while he was at work just wasn't going to cut it. Instead, I told him W and I made a surprise for him when he got home, and we made him cover his eyes and wait.

The Sheriff brought the tests in a ziploc to "Our favorite Daddy of three: The Sheriff, our angel in heaven, and the one in Momma's belly."

Obviously, The Sheriff was done after his completed his part, but Daddy's smile completed that very blessed day.

So What Wednesday

It's Wednesday, so...

So What Wednesday

Go check out Shannon's new look and find out what everyone is saying So What about!
For me? I'm saying SO WHAT that...

*I had my first pumpkin spice frapp. this morning and... Sold, I am not.

*We had our first dentist visit thanks to a little teeth-concrete meet and greet Saturday evening. I refused to bring the camera. My inner dentist's daughter squashed the mama-razzi in me.

*Both The Sheriff and I most likely ate our daily dose of whole grains with the sheer number of Wheat Thins we consumed at our double park trip yesterday afternoon.

*Three "So Whats" are all I've got.

Happy Wednesday!

September Slow Down

Honestly, I wish the month of September would just pass already. October 1 would mean confirmation at another doctor's appointment, hopefully a burst of cooler weather, a step into the holiday season which of course means decorating, food, and seeing family.

This feeling isn't just a whim, but in fact would affect my daily life if I didn't confront it, slap it around, and tell it that it's not going to steal my NOW.

I began this post thinking I'd make a list of what I would accomplish in September instead of wishing for next month. I thought I'd plan creative ways to spend my time and make memories, to play and learn with our son, to connect with friends, to check "stuff" off the list. While each of these is valuable and enriching in its own right, instead, maybe this month is a gift.

September is my gift, not to do, make, plan, and accomplish, but to simply be.
September is for taking life as it comes and allowing moments to create themselves.
September is for slowing down and savoring.

So we'll sing more silly songs, play trains a little bit longer, dance more often, and walk around the house flying helicopters like there's no tomorrow (or at least no laundry to fold or dinner to prepare)!

Grandparent's Day

Unfortunately, we live 300+ miles away from our grandparents, so when Grandparents' Day rolls around each year, we'll do our best to shower them with snail mail and if we can get everyone on the same page, some Skype calls.

This year The Sheriff and I put on our crafting hats and created unique cards for each "set." Heaven forbid we do the same handprint over again without someone thinking he can do it all by himself! Momma's got to get tricky sometimes.

Our creations (thanks in part to Pinterest):

Now we have the rest of September before gearing up for some serious pumpkin fun in October. Maybe the weather will cool down enough so we'll want to stay outside instead of crafting indoors!

Four For Friday

Because 5 would be nice, but 4's all I've got!

1. I splurged yesterday and had our sitter come over so I could go out for a mani/pedi (just saying it that way makes me feel ridiculously spoiled, but there's a first for everything I suppose). So I feel all pretty and girly and whatnot, but I must admit that the "complimentary" neck and shoulder massage almost had me in tears. Seriously. Then I realized I wore the wrong shoes to get my pedicure.

I realize that taking this picture might make me a bad person. She was super cute!! I just can't imagine running around town in those heels! Girly-girl I am not!

2. I need to do a better job of documenting this pregnancy. Ok, maybe not. I didn't for W, and all turned out just fine; he was PPE (Pre-Pinterest Era), so a ridiculous number of cute ideas weren't at my fingertips flashing me with mom guilt. If I could get my stuff together (and look back through my blog and calendar for the last 14 weeks), I'd make a pregnancy book like this. Absolutely adorable!

3. Speaking of being pregnant, someone loves chips -- like could eat entire bags and be fine but I haven't done that (yet) loves chips.

4. It's a wedding weekend over here, and while I am so excited to celebrate with our friends, can I admit that the thought of being out past midnight terrifies me. Thankful I will be surrounded by some of my best friends to keep me going.

DIY "God Made You" Subway Art

When I came across this pin, I knew that it would be a project on which I'd follow through. I love the idea of giving our children a visual reminder of who they are and who God created them to be. I made this for W's room quite some time ago, and perhaps there's an argument that I cannot know just who he'd be at such a young age. I beg to differ as their little personalities shine early. We came up with this list, and I love how it turned out.

I followed the directions from the original site here, but it went a little something like this:

1. Create print in Picnik (now I'd use Picmonkey). This was the hardest part for me as it's sometimes really difficult to grab text/pictures and move around. If you have Adobe Illustrator access (or maybe Pixelmator-- which the hubs promises to teach me someday), I'm guessing that's a better bet.  If you aren't sure how to create in Picmonkey, Google it! I'm certain there are tutorials out there, and if not, let me know!

2. Ask husband how to manipulate the ratios to print to the size of your canvas. (Remember, English teacher. Writing, reading, words, words, words. The whole numbers thing left my brain after freshman year of college.)

3.  Save image (in appropriate size) and send to Walgreens or printing place of choice. Walgreens happened to have a sale, so that's where my money went!

4. Follow steps on original post for painting canvas and glueing. AND she's got an etsy shop, so if you aren't in the market to DIY, pay a visit!

Excuse the wall coloring in this picture. The Sheriff's room has terrible lighting thanks to the black out curtains.  I think this print captures this guy perfectly:
